The threshold implies an invitation, a right to be somewhere, or the possibility of being barred entry. Am I welcome here? Will this place change me or will I remain the same? The mouth is the threshold of the body. From it comes language, with its internal limitations on what can be said and thought, not unlike the home that returns to us no matter how earnestly we try to escape. The body holds us captive as much as it enables our movement. In sickness, states of abandon, and heightened awareness an unsettling occurs and we are forced to reckon with ourselves and the pleasure and displeasure of our discontinuous existence.
Remember that the child's first laugh is a cry that is interrupted by the reappearance of the beloved (Ha-!). To be swept into the tornado and engage with my own powerlessness is the point from which I can confront the systems that surveil and count bodies but do not provide shelter unless certain conditions are met.
